Traditionally, the lotus grows in muddy ponds. When the shining flower bud opens above the water, none of the mud adheres to its petals. Lotuses have thus become symbols for purity and virtue. The closed lotus represents our potential for clarity, understanding and open-heartedness. The open lotus represents the blossoming of those qualities in our life. Hence the use of the lotus symbols for the varying chakras ………
Chakra 5 | Throat | Sound, Creative identity, oriented to self-expression
| The fifth chakra is associated with the ether element and symbolised as a turquoise sixteen petal lotus flower. It is situated between the collar bone and the larynx on the neck and is linked to the thyroid/parathyroid. This is your centre of will and choice. It acts as a bridge between the physical and spiritual energies. It concerns our will and ability to define our own needs and the choices we make. When open and balanced, we are able to express our truths, creativity, and emotional needs openly and honestly without fear of what others might think. Inner hearing is linked to this chakra. Activation stimulates clairaudience.
Communication, Independence, Fluid Thought, and Inspiration.
You reinforce energy at the fifth chakra when you:
* Exercise self-control
* Empower others
* Speak honestly
Affirmation: I surrender my personal will to the Divine.
The Throat Chakra – Purity
THROAT – Chakra Five:
The fifth chakra is located at the level of the throat and controls the psychic consciousness of hearing, and listening to both the true meaning of others’ communication, and your guides. It also activates the function of listening, especially deep listening. This includes telepathy as well as hearing the guiding wisdom of your soul. The ability is called clairaudience.
Human Challenge and Gift – to fearlessly express our truth and hear the sound of the universe.
Soul Desire – to be heard and understood, to transmit and receive the Truth.
Primal Relationship – with our vibrational connection with all existence.
Also known as: Cornucopia Centre, Vishuddha
Body Mind Associations:
Location: Base of the throat
Colour: Sky blue
Parts of the body: This chakra controls the throat and the neck, and the arms and the hands. It is associated with the brachial or cervical plexus.
Endocrine Gland: Thyroid Gland
Sense: Sense of Hearing
Element: Ether, as the crossover between the physical world and the world of Spirit. On the physical level, it corresponds to deep space as the most subtle physical element. From the point of view of the Spiritual, it represents the matrix on which physical reality manifests.
Consciousness: The aspects of expressing and receiving. Expressing can be in the form of communicating what one wants and what one feels, or it can be an artistic expression, as an artist painting, a dancer dancing, a musician playing music, using a form for expressing and bringing to the outside what was within. Expressing is related to receiving, as in “Ask, and ye shall receive.”
This chakra is associated with listening to one’s intuition, which guides one in an optimal flow, in which one sees one’s goals manifest, and it seems that the Universe provides all their needs with no effort on their part at all. It’s a state of Grace. Abundance, therefore, is associated with this chakra, as is the aspect of unconditional receiving necessary to accept the abundance of the Universe.
This is the first level of consciousness in which one perceives directly another level of Intelligence, and experiences one’s interaction with this other Intelligence.
Metaphysically, this chakra is related to creativity, creating, manifesting in the physical world the fulfilment of one’s goals.

5th Chakra ~ Throat
Vishuddha ~ Sound Element
The Sanskrit name Vishudda means ‘to purify’.
Vishudda is viewed as the fifth chakra (from the bottom)
This is the chakra located in the throat and is thus related to communication and creativity. Here we experience the world symbolically through vibration, such as the vibration of sound representing language.
Clear communication, creativity, resonance. This is the chakra located in the throat and is thus related to communication and creativity. Here we experience the world symbolically through vibration, such as the vibration of sound representing language.
The fifth chakra is the chakra of diplomacy, of pure relationships with others, and of playful detachment.
It removes all of our guilt and remorse when it is opened by the Kundalini, and gives us a kind and compassionate voice. The tendencies to dominate others or to feel dominated by others, the feelings of superiority or inferiority and all jealousies are removed when this chakra is nourished by the Kundalini.
Also, the Vishuddhi is the chakra which gives us the connection with the whole, enabling us to feel our oneness and the fact that we are all part and parcel of the whole.
Number of petals – Sixteen
Points out – trust, to follow one’s inner voice.
With the fifth chakra we are on our way into the spiritual world. The position of the chakra in the throat symbolises ‘the narrow path’. Here begins the individual road which requires decisions and concerns the actual meaning of our lives. Here the need for security of the personal ego must be replaced by trust and inner conviction. The Higher Self becomes important.
Key terms to understand the archetypical aspect of Vishudda:
To listen to and follow one’s true self; nobody can serve two masters; to express one’s true beliefs; to act out of total trust.
We can think about our own experiences of and our attitude towards these aspects. We can also seek ways to work with them in an adequate manner.
Chakra visualisation can be a wonderful tool in your development and it can help you to realise what you are and who you are. Just because of that it should be used with respect. Particularly if you’re using some breathing technique at the same time.
Being conscious of a chakra and it’s aspects means that one activates it to a certain degree. Focused good thoughts and positive energy are also activating. Don’t forget that it’s your own consciousness that guides the visualisation.

This fifth chakra is situated at the base of the neck in the throat. This chakra is represented by the blue Vishuddha mandala (purity), the element of ether and is also symbolised by the human race. It influences communication, dreaming, artistic expression, good judgement, self belief, wisdom, truthfulness, out of body experiences and clairaudience. Physically it influences the mouth, teeth, throat, thyroid gland and the immune system.
When the fifth chakra is balanced, it allows for free communication helping us to fell centred and happy. It also helps us while we are meditating to connect with our higher guidance.
If this chakra is not working properly it can create negative influences in the physical. This can be seen in the form of sore throats, communication problems, earaches or infections, chronic colds, thyroid problems, speech difficulties, chronic tiredness and depression. It can also lead to control of others through deceit and dishonesty. If the energy flow is too great it can make us inflexible, dominating, egotistical, big-headed, causing us to have a self righteous attitude. A lack of energy can cause us to be nervous and frightened causing introversion, and tending to keep our thoughts and our self to our self, also opposing any kind of change.
Unblocking & balancing aids to help realign the fifth or throat chakra – We can help to balance this chakra by listening to good music, singing, chanting, going for walks, looking at the sky, watching our breath and meditating outside. Bringing balance to this chakra unlocks the energy flow to the other Chakras.
In addition to clairaudience, the fifth chakra also opens your consciousness to your subconscious records, and to the subconscious records of all time, known as the Akashic records. Sometimes, through this chakra, a person will also hear spiritual music.
If this chakra is off balance or shut down, you will be plagued with negative self-talk and inner voices. You may repress your ability to express yourself authentically, to be honest with others or listen deeply to what others are saying. You may tune out others, or partially tune them out, so as to manipulate what you hear. You may also hear negative ‘voices’ that confuse, coerce or upset you. You may tune into negative astral planes, attracting confusion or distorting your focus and concentration. You may struggle with intense negative self-dialogue, being overly critical and self destructive in your words, telling yourself mean and harmful things. You may have too many voices in your head at one time — those of yourself, others and spirits all mixed up together, leaving you confused and disoriented.

If one was traumatised between the ages of 16-21, 46-51 or 76-81, there may be an unbalanced Fifth Chakra. The Fifth Chakra is about speaking to others in a kind and loving manner. It’s about diplomacy, truth, integrity and one’s vocation. It’s about feeling equal with others (not superior or inferior). If one feels the need to dominate all conversations, telling ‘one up’ stories, interrupting others or carrying on several conversations at once; it is likely one has a fifth chakra imbalance.
An imbalance in this chakra presents itself with the ‘stuffing of one’s emotions’, being fearful of honest, emotional communication; often then eating food instead of communicating. This often leads one to become overweight, as it is easier to eat than to risk potentially painful feelings and issues.
Perhaps not the over communicator, but the quiet one; the one who may only speak a handful of words in the course of a full day, keeping quiet during conversations due to fear that one may say the wrong thing,
Or when you do speak often one feels compelled to put others down, often in a subtle passive aggressive manner; one may notice that others may be afraid to look converse as they will likely not be treated well. Often this is accompanied by the loss of laughter in one’s life. When laughter used to come so easily it now seems nearly impossible. Often the laughter one does emit is pointed towards others in a hurtful manner.
If one is irritated by noise, even cheerful noise, or music, there may be an imbalance here; if one used to enjoy singing, but one’s singing voice is not what it used to be, that would indicate an imbalance in the fifth chakra. Another presentation is when one is obsessed with truth and integrity, being unable to forgive those who are not completely truthful, or conversely often telling untruths or exaggerations to make oneself feel more important.
This is the chakra which allows one to communicate with spirits as well as clairaudience; if those are activities one would either like to promote or have the ability to turn them ‘off’, gemstones for the 5th chakra will assist with that.
Physical symptoms of an imbalanced Fifth Chakra may include problems with the Thyroid gland, ears (hearing included), eyes, sinuses, throat, teeth.
Therapy might include laying the proper gemstone upon the Fifth Chakra for 5-25 minutes. You may find surrounding yourself with the Scents of the Fifth Chakra helpful. Since this is the Chakra of music, you may find playing the music of your choice helpful when working with this Chakra. Visualise a Bright Light Blue Vortex of light in the shape of a flower emanating slightly upward from your throat. Visualise speaking to others in a kind and loving way and being spoken to in the same way. Imagine this Blue Light sending away all negativity, all feelings of superiority and untruths. When you feel cleansed, ask the Blue Light to bring in the ability to communicate in ways that draw persons to you, to bring in the abundant creative energy of the cosmos, telepathy, and intuition–pulling it in. Let the Light Blue Flower expand and grow in power. Then close the petals and keep the power inside to be drawn upon as needed.
“I am in the brotherhood of man, neither better nor worse than any man I meet”
“I listen. I speak”
Indicators of Fifth Chakra Imbalances:
* Difficulty talking about one’s own emotions
* Weight issues – repressing communication with food
* Trouble ‘Listening’, interrupting, dominating conversations, having more than one conversation at one time
* Trouble telling the ‘full truth’, exaggerating, keeping quiet when one should speak
* Wavering sense of humour, having difficulty laughing – when it used to be easy
* Creatively stifled, unable to create, paint, write
* Having trouble with an otherwise wonderful singing voice
* Floundering morality or integrity, unsure how to stop
* Dental, nose, neck, ear, thyroid issues
Also the Sefirot of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life represents psychic powers or archetypes. The Tree is a picture of Creation.
Vishudda corresponds to sefira Daath in the Tree. Daath means ‘knowledge’ and is often given the number eleven.
This is a debated correspondence since Daath is not a generally recognised sefira. Only modern interpreters from the 20th century have mentioned Daath as a genuine sefira in the Tree and many say this is a sign of our spiritual development. Daath is situated below the first sefira, between the second and the third, above what that is called ‘the abyss’. This sefira is also called ‘the invisible sefira’, the bridge over ‘the abyss’ and ‘the prism’.

The inner depths
Mastery over the chakras enhances health and development of the being. Once a person masters a particular level of chakra they are ready for the next level. Certain gifts are awakened within the individual. These gifts are usable within the frame of power and nature of the harmony instilled by this form of self-development. Those who will abuse it will be cut off and disengaged of their power and gifts. Upon the awareness of these gifts there will be most likely hurdles and stumbling blocks. They are designed to test your worthiness and responsibility of them and for your maximum capacity to use them.
With great power comes great responsibility. Those willing to harbour the responsibility are then accentuated in the power. Those unable to harbour the responsibility will be consumed by the power.
Eventually these gifts and powers within themselves will become stumbling blocks and one must transcend them.
There is a purpose in these but in the long run we will not need them.
