SACRAL / ABDOMINAL CHAKRA
Traditionally, the lotus grows in muddy ponds. When the shining flower bud opens above the water, none of the mud adheres to its petals. Lotuses have thus become symbols for purity and virtue. The closed lotus represents our potential for clarity, understanding and open-heartedness. The open lotus represents the blossoming of those qualities in our life. Hence the use of the lotus symbols for the varying chakras ………
|Chakra 2 | Sacral or Abdominal | Water, Emotional identity, oriented to self-gratification|
The second chakra is associated with the water element and symbolised as an orange-gold six petal lotus flower. It is situated just below the navel and is linked to the Emotional body and the adrenals. It is concerned with the assimilation of food as well as ideas which bring about a sense of joy. Sexuality is transmuted into the creative arts through self expression. It is your centre of control and one-on-one relationships. It is where you store energy associated with sex, interpersonal power, and money. Adversarial relationships, jealousies, sexual confusion and conflicts, and addictions are all signs of energy leakage at this chakra. Awakening helps remembrance of astral travel.

Svadhisthana ~ Water Element
The Sacral or Abdominal Chakra
Svadisthana is one of the seven archetypical chakras, that is, one of our levels of consciousness.
The Sanskrit name Svadisthana means sweetness or “one’s own abode”.
Svadhisthana is also sometimes called the Genital or Sexual chakra.
Svadisthana is viewed as the second chakra (from the bottom).
Fluidity, pleasure, healthy sexuality, feeling
The second chakra, located in the abdomen, lower back, and sexual organs, is related to the element water, and to emotions and sexuality. It connects us to others through feeling, desire, sensation, and movement. Ideally this chakra brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfilment, and the ability to accept change.
The second chakra is the chakra of creativity, pure attention and pure knowledge. It is the one which connects us to the inner source of inspiration, and enables us to experience the beauty around us.
The pure knowledge given by this chakra is not mental, but it is direct perception of the Reality, that can be felt in our palms and indicates our subtle blockages. Also this is the centre of pure, steady attention and power of concentration.
On the physical level it looks after our liver, kidneys, and the lower abdomen. When we think too much, this centre gets drained of energy and diseases like diabetes or blood cancer can occur when this chakra goes completely out of balance.
This chakra is also associated with the emotional body, and the person’s willingness to feel their own emotions.
Number of petals – Six
Points out – the subconscious, the astral world
Symbolises our unexplored subconsciousness. It reminds us that we live in two worlds, one visible and one invisible.
Key terms to understand the archetypical aspect of Svadhisthana:
Understanding the basic polarity, meetings, relations, projections, our subconsciousness, the moon, “water hollows out the stone,” creative power, sexuality, power.
We can think about our own experiences of, and our attitude towards, these aspects. We can also seek ways to work with them in an adequate manner.
Chakra visualization can be a wonderful tool in your development and it can help you to realize what you are and who you are. Just because of that it should be used with respect. Particularly if you’re using some breathing technique at the same time.
Being conscious of a chakra and it’s aspects means that one activates it to a certain degree. Focused good thoughts and positive energy are also activating. Don’t forget that it’s your own consciousness that guides the visualisation.
Intellect and keep marital vows.
Joyful stone. Can act as an energy booster to restore you both spiritually and physically.
Vitality, courage and sexual prowess.
Helps those who were sexually abused.
Reduce desire for pleasure.
Increase vitality. Remove “hang-ups”.
Balances male/female energies.
Brings intellect into sexual desire.
This second chakra focuses on the aligning of the mental, emotional and physical levels with desires/pleasures. This point stores all those instinctual natures where they are transmuted into a fine balance from the ego into complete giving and selflessness.
When this chakra is clean the person only thinks positive thoughts, thus no impure thoughts/feelings can penetrate. Sex is only impure if done for egoistic reasons and or by hurting others. (Sadism/masochism hurts others therefore forcing a karmic burden upon someone else.) When the two people make love, lights mix and the purple waves create figures. Beauty depends on the love between the parties. When there is great love, there are fantastic auras that can be compared to a fairy tale scene with the leaves and flowers that arc above the lovers (as seen from the higher realm). These powerful vibrations burn away a lot of negative aspects.
By loving another person and showing it by sexual behaviour, one can develop very much personally and spiritually. There is an element of giving rather than taking. Both are willing to give up egoistic demands in favour of giving to another.
The purity that is reflected in one’s attitudes means a life without complaining, living in accordance with the truth of life and manifesting one’s own reality, either positive or negative.
Situated just below the navel, the Sacral Chakra corresponds with bodily functions having to do with liquid: circulation, urinary elimination, sexuality and reproduction.
If we have our base survival needs met in the Base Chakra, we are more able to look at other aspects of life, and this creates desire, which gets us to move, to reach out, to grow and to change.
The colour of the Sacral Chakra is orange. It is ruled by the Moon, and is the centre of sexuality, emotions, nurturance, pleasure and creativity. It is slow in movement, but not as slow as the Base Chakra.
Malfunctions of the Sacral Chakra can be indicated by being overly ruled by our emotions with frequent and dramatic emotional episodes or on the other hand being flat, lifeless, dull and dry – two extremes which could be seen as polarities.
As with all polarities, when they balance each other, the relationship is healthy, and the person prospers but, when there are extremes of one or the other, problems can occur.
Imbalances of this Chakra can show in the physical body with uterine or bladder trouble or in some cases, impotence or frigidity.
Taking the centre line through the extremes of any situation is the best option, and by using our natural creativity we can help ourselves maintain emotional balance.
An Orange Flower with 6 petals.
Problems with the Second Chakra (Sacral) coincide with major traumas between about 4 and 8 years of age. The focus of this chakra returns between 34 and 38 and again between 64 and 68.
Did you undergo a major trauma in your life during this period? Were you abandoned? Did you parents divorce? Traumas during this time are reflected in our ability to be intimate with another human being, to give and receive sexual pleasure and provide comfort and allow ourselves to be comforted.
Likewise, if you have unresolved issues related to sexual abuse or rape, your Sacral Chakra is likely unbalanced.
A Second Chakra Imbalance may manifest as sexual frigidity, guilt, being cold, unapproachable and aloof. On the other hand, a Second Chakra Imbalance may be expressed as being over-sexed, using persons for sexual gratification alone, living a hedonistic lifestyle and battling sexual addictions.
Physical symptoms of a Second Chakra imbalance include problems with the ovaries/testicles, impotence and lymph system problems.
Chakra Therapy would include laying the proper gemstone upon the Second Chakra for 5-25 minutes.
Imagine an orange vortex of energy coming from the area between the pubic bone and the naval, emanating forward from your belly. At the same time, think of feeling intimate with another, feeling the warmth of their skin against yours. Imagine providing comfort and pleasure and being comforted and pleasured. Release all guilt relating to sex and realise that sexual intimacy is a natural part of a healthy lifestyle.
“I welcome intimacy as one of life’s greatest pleasures”
“Comforting another human being is one of the kindest things”
“I welcome the comfort of others in times of need”
Indicators of Second Chakra Imbalances:
* Over-sexed, or sex addiction
* Denial of sexual impulses, frigidity
* Difficulty with intimacy in general
* Inability to comfort another or receive comfort and tenderness from another
* Denial of all pleasure or a very hedonistic (pleasure-seeker) lifestyle
* Reproductive problems, disease of the gonads, ovaries and uterus
Also the Sefirot (spheres or emanations, singular form =Sefira) of The Tree of Life represent psychic powers of the archetypes. The Tree is a picture of creation.
The Sefira corresponding to Svadhistana is Yesod, which means “the foundation” and is situated in the second lowest position in the Tree.
Yesod belongs to the astral world which is the basis of the material world. It’s “the bridge between possibility and reality” also called “the pictorial treasury” which refers to original forms and archetypes. Here creation is at rest before becoming manifest and visible.
Aspects to work with /meditate on, in Yesod:
The astral planes and the universal energies
Mastery over the chakras enhances health and development of the being. Once a person masters a particular level of chakra they are ready for the next level. Certain gifts are awakened within the individual. These gifts are usable within the frame of power and nature of the harmony instilled by this form of self-development. Those who will abuse it will be cut off and disengaged of their power and gifts. Upon the awareness of these gifts there will be most likely hurdles and stumbling blocks. They are designed to test your worthiness and responsibility of them and for your maximum capacity to use them.
With great power comes great responsibility. Those willing to harbour the responsibility are then accentuated in the power. Those unable to harbour the responsibility will be consumed by the power.
Eventually these gifts and powers within themselves will become stumbling blocks and one must transcend them.
There is a purpose in these but in the long run we will not need them.
